In 2009 Mechelen (Belgium) will be carrying the title of archbishopric for the four hundred fiftieth year. On the one hand this anniversary is taken as an opportunity for looking back, but it will also be used for looking ahead and creating scenarios for the city’s future: City Visions
... it is not the image you would see, nor the song you would hear, but rather an image you see though you close your eyes, and a song you hear though you shut your ears... (Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet)
For Stadsvisioenen (City Visions), Firefly, a workplace for the visual arts in Brussels, set up a temporary collective: Orla Barry, Els Dietvorst & Hassan Darsi, Marjolijn Dijkman, Christoph Fink, Suchan Kinoshita, Johanna Kirsch. This international ensemble of artists immersed itself in Mechelen over several months to work on SoNGLiNeS.
SoNGLiNeS can be seen as a project in which the symbols, dreams and desires of a particular place are brought together in images.
Inspiration was found on the streets and in ‘non places’, on imperceptible boundaries and in invisible places. But it also came from the myths and visions of Mechelen.
SoNGLiNeS is a project in which the collective consciousness, the conscious and the unconscious have been transformed into a magnificent visual experience.
Through live performances, video installations and nomadic interventions in the cityscape, these ‘non places’ will be returned, as it were, to the public.
