THE BLACK LAMB/2

In August 2010 artist and filmmaker, Els Dietvorst, moved from Brussels to a small rural community on the southeast coast of Ireland. Driven to reconnect herself and her family to living off the land, Els Dietvorst and Orla Barry establish a sheep farm on the outskirts of the village of Duncormick, County Wexford. In THE BLACK LAMB, an online film project started in 2012, Dietvorst captures mementos from her own reality with fleeting glimpses into the worlds of six local characters. She is drawn to unconventional individuals determined to live as far from the mainstream grid as possible. Dietvorst performs the dual role of sheep-farmer-come-artist-documentarian in this film.

THE BLACK LAMB II is the second update in a series. One could easily proclaim this episode as representative of the year of the farmer. 2012 began with an excessively wet summer, then a rotten winter. Crops did not grow enough or at all. Animals came down with all sorts of strange illnesses. Death was everywhere. In THE BLACK LAMB II Els tracks the lives of four local characters focusing on their work and their relationships with their animals. We again meet Matt—the thatcher who calls his chicken and three dogs his only friends; Frank who talks about his newborn lambs; Orla who shares her special relationship with Zwartbles sheep; and Dennis, Lilly and Vivienne who share their reflections on death and the most ethical way to kill an animal.
